MITERLESS WOOD MOULDING SYSTEM

MANTEL

Installation of Leg Kit

Please read through these installation instructions and visualize the steps before beginning the installation.

Equipment needed for dry wall location: Hammer, nailset, electric drill or cordless drill, drill bits, wood saw, measuring tape, woodscrews at least 3 1/2" long (course-thread deck screws work well) or nails at least 3 1/2"long(screws are preferred), screwdriver for deck screws, molly bolt anchors with long bolts (or equal), 2" finish nails, level, stud finder (can be very helpful but not required), “liquid nail" construction adhesive or equivalent, and wood putty.

For brick location: Masonry drill bit and heavy duty masonry anchors and companion bolts or screws that will extend 1 1/2" outside the anchor (for mounting boards) when fully screwed into anchor. Use two for each leg mounting board.

General sequence of steps is to momentarily position leg kit on fireplace in order to determine preferred height and width and locate where mounting boards will go, then to install mounting boards, then install leg kit.

Parts list : 2 legs (1 left and 1 right), 1 center rail, 2 foot caps, 2 leg mounting boards (2x4), 1 center rail mounting board (1 1/4"x 3), 1 top rail trim moulding.

Step No. 1 : Slide center rail of leg kit onto legs and position leg kit on fireplace. (In some cases it may be easier to just stand the legs themselves without the center rail to determine desired location). The Uniform Building Code specifies that wooden mantels have a clearance of 12" from the top and sides of the standard fireplace opening. (Slightly less in some cases). However, some local codes vary and some firebox inserts and stoves require more or less clearance. Please consult your local fire Marshall or building inspector and the instructions of the insert or stove maker. Conforming to the code is the responsibility of the homeowner/installer. JIFFY-TRIM MANTEL cannot be responsible for incorrect installation of mantels. With these considerations in mind decide on your desired location.

Step No. 2 : With legs in preferred location and plumb, measure from the inside of the left leg to the inside of the right leg.To this Measurement add 8". This is the length of the center rail and center rail mounting board. Measure and cut center rail and center rail mounting board.

Step No. 3 : Slide center rail onto legs in desired location around fireplace. With leg kit centered on fireplace, check to be sure that the legs are plumb. On your wall, lightly mark down the outside of the legs.

Step No. 4 : Set leg kit aside. Draw lines parallel to the outside-of-leg lines and 5/8" inside of them. These lines indicate the positions of the outside edges of the leg mounting boards. See figure #1.

Step No. 5 : Set leg kit back in position so that you can determine your preferred height, top is typically 40" to 46" from floor. Be sure closest part of leg kit meets local code clearance requirement around firebox opening. Check center rail for level. On your wall, lightly mark across the top of the center rail. With leg kit in place find its center and make a mark on your wall. Set leg kit aside.

Step No. 6 : Measure the distance from the floor to the mark you made at the top of the center rail. This measurement minus 2"is the length of the legs. Measure and cut the legs. (Making sure you cut the bottoms of the legs).

Step No. 7 : Draw a line parallel to the top of center rail line and 5/8" lower. This indicates the position of the top of the center rail mounting board.

Step No. 8 : Measure overall leg length and cut leg mounting boards to overall length minus 4". Measure length of center rail mounting board and mark its center.

Step No. 9 : Attach leg mounting boards and center rail mounting board (be sure to line up the center mark on the mounting board with the center mark you made on your wall) using “liquid nail" and drywall screws. Or use masonry anchors if brick or stone surface. Use the large screws or nails into all studs covered by the mounting board(s), and use no less than 3 fasteners for a mounting board. If there are no studs present behind the drywall, use molly bolts (or equal) spaced every 12" along the length of the mounting board(s). (Make sure leg mounting boards are setting on floor).

Step No. 10 : Place foot caps in position. slide center rail onto legs and slide legs into foot caps. Fit leg kit over mounting boards to desired location. If any adjustments are needed to the mounting boards, do this now. Pre-drill nail holes 3/4" from the wall every 8" across the top of the center rail and along the outside of the legs where they overlap mounting boards (using a drill bit slightly narrower than the finish nails) then attach the leg kit and foot caps to the mounting boards using the finish nails. With hammer and nailset set each nail head. Fill holes with wood putty.
